GE buys Canadian cyber-security firm, Wurldtech

12 May, 2014

GE is buying the Canadian cyber-security specialist Wurldtech, for an undisclosed sum. The move is one of several by GE to help protect critical infrastructure and to advance cyber-security efforts globally for key industries.

Wurldtech, founded in 2006, focuses on protecting critical infrastructures from cyber-attacks, especially in complex environments such as oil refineries and, power transmission grids, as well as guarding individual assets. Its customers span sectors including manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, water treatment, power generation and oil and gas.

Wurldtech claims to offer a strategic approach to cyber-security that helps to protect the operations technology (OT) that connects people, data and machines – maximising system uptime and mitigating exposure to vulnerabilities. GE says that the acquisition will help to enhance the reliability of industrial Internet operations.

“The world of OT security needs to be foundationally different from traditional IT detection systems,” explains GE Software vice-president, Bill Ruh. “Securing connected machines has a unique set of complexities that are very different from protecting a data centre. At GE, we are focused on software platform security, protecting critical infrastructure and helping to ensure the reliability of Industrial Internet operations for our customers and industries. The acquisition of Wurldtech is a perfect fit for addressing all of these big challenges.”

Wurldtech will keep its name and will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of GE.
