Radwell buys UK repairs specialist, Northern Industrial

Radwell International, the US-headquartered specialist in surplus and remanufactured industrial control systems, has bought the Blackburn-based automation repairs firm, Northern Industrial, for an undisclosed sum.

Radwell says the move will increase efficiency and offer better value. The combined business be able to adapt and scale to meet the needs of customers worldwide. Northern Industrial will operate as a division of Radwell.

“After over 40 years of growth, Northern Industrial is delighted to become part of Radwell,” says David Lenehan, former managing director of Northern Industrial, who has now become general manager of Radwell’s operations in Europe. “This is a hugely positive move not only for all our team in Blackburn but also for our customers across the world. With this change, we aim to establish a closer connection between all our products and services and provide a streamlined source for our customers.

“The ultimate goal is to be the go-to partner to help businesses keep up-and-running, offering support, expertise, and solutions to help them succeed,” he continues. “As part of Radwell, we are confident we can achieve that at an even greater level.”

Northern Industrial, which supplies new, reconditioned and obsolete parts and repair services to 146 countries, was started in 1978 by David Lenehan’s father, John, who had previously been a maintenance engineer at Thwaites Brewery. By the time of its acquisition, the company was employing more than 30 electronics engineers, held more than £10m in stock, with more than 200,000 parts numbers from more than 1,350 manufacturers.

Last year, Northern Industrial opened a site in Germany, focusing on customers in the EU. It also set up an opeation in Mexico to serve the Americas.

Radwell International, which specialises in distribution and light manufacturing, was founded in 1979. The company, whose global headquarters are in New Jersey, provides new and refurbished industrial automation components for the repair and maintenance of equipment.

With more than 2,000 employees in 15 locations the US, Canada and Europe, Radwell International distributes products for more than 350 manufacturers and specialises in hard-to-source parts. The company says that its technology-enabled distribution model differentiates it from others. It is an MRO supplier that focuses on the "break-fix" aftermarket for low-cost, critical components.

Radwell’s UK operations are based in Newcastle under Lyme and Tamworth in Staffordshire.
