Extension will more than double Invertek’s VSD output

03 April, 2023

The Welsh drives-maker Invertek has started work on a 2,771m2 extension to its manufacturing and distribution facility in Welshpool, Powys. The extension to the existing 5,500m2 facility is part of a £10m investment that also includes a new Application and Training Centre.

The extension will allow Invertek to boost production of its Optidrive VSDs from 460,000 a year to more than 1.2 million. It will also create new jobs at the company, which currently employs more than 350 people at its headquarters.

The work is in addition to a recently announced £6.3m Innovation Centre planned for land next to the site.

Invertek’s directors have marked the start of construction with a ground-breaking ceremony at the site.

“It’s great to see work beginning on this latest phase in Invertek’s growth,” says Shaun Dean, Invertek Drives’ CEO, senior vice-president of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, and CEO of PTC EMEIA HQ. “Sumitomo Heavy Industries is investing significantly in the business at Welshpool where we are also increasing skilled employment and career opportunities.

“We have seen exceptional growth over the past three years,” he adds. “The new facility will allow us to increase production to match future expectations and is a commitment by SHI and Invertek to our long-term future in the area.”

The existing manufacturing facility was completed in 2019. The extra space is needed to accommodate the significant growth of the business since then, and demonstrates the investment being made in Invertek by its parent, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, which acquired the business in 2019.

Invertek is undertaking a recruitment drive for careers ranging from graduate placements to production personnel and electrical engineers.
