Portable sensor and phone apps simplify machine monitoring

SKF has developed an easy-to-use machine-health monitoring technology based on a portable sensing device that is placed on a machine and transmits vibration and temperature data wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet where an app analyses the data.

There is a choice of two apps, which are available for iOS and Android devices. The entry-level QuickCollect app offers storage and analysis, with predefined alarm levels. The data can be emailed and photos can be taken of the machinery.

The more powerful DataCollect app offers extended diagnostic capabilities, and can manage and monitor maintenance tasks and inspection data. It also allows users to register for, and connect to, the SKF cloud for access to remote expert services.

The battery-powered QuickCollect sensor is designed to be used by maintenance staff and others during walk-through machine inspection routines. The sensor and app need no special skills to use, yet can analyse an asset’s condition in real time.

The IP65-protected, Atex-certified sensor attaches magnetically to the machine being monitored and transmits data wirelessly via Bluetooth. It will work for eight hours on one battery charge, and is designed to survive a 1.8m drop.

In addition to vibration and temperature monitoring, the DataCollect app provides vibration diagnostics based on ISO standards, compliance of maintenance tasks and inspections, report generation, date and time stamping, and compatibility with SKF’s @ptitude Inspector software.

“The biggest challenge when using data to smarten up your equipment maintenance routines, is getting that data in the first place,” points out Barrie Rogers, SKF’s Enlight QuickCollect product manager. “The QuickCollect sensor and apps make this task not only easier but also cheaper than ever before. This entry-level machine monitoring system doesn’t require lots of training or skilled vibration analysts; it gives you on-the-spot indication of machine health, automated diagnostics, plus the ability to connect to expert help when problems are identified.”
