Motion control software adds support for OPC-UA

04 January, 2017

Siemens has updated its Simotion motion control software, equipping it with object-oriented programming (OOP) and communications via OPC UA.

The addition of OOP to version 4.5 of the software (in accordance with IEC 61131-3 ED3) allows complex applications to be broken down into manageable object structures that illustrate the structure of a modular machine, for example. Users can standardise and re-use software modules and cut programming and testing costs, as well as the risk of errors. Siemens says that this will allow them to implement large projects more efficiently than before.

Support for OPC UA means that Simotion data can be accessed in a standardised, manufacturer-independent way, across all levels, up to the cloud. Authentication, authorisation and encryption protect the communications. The OPC UA capability complements Profinet communications in areas such as real-time communications, where both protocols use a single cable without any loss in performance.
