ElectroCraft buys fellow US motor-maker, Hansen

03 July, 2014

The fractional horsepower motor manufacturer ElectroCraft has acquired another US motor-maker, Hansen Corporation, which produces DC motors, synchronous motors and clock movements. Terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

“We are pleased to welcome Hansen Corporation to the ElectroCraft family,” says president and CEO, Mike Karsonovich. “Hansen has had a very successful 100-year history and is known throughout the industry for its incredibly high quality.

“We are very excited about the drive, experience, portfolio and manufacturing capabilities that Hansen and the Hansen team brings to ElectroCraft,” he continues. “But the most compelling aspect of the combination of Hansen and ElectroCraft is the value that it brings to our customers. Hansen and ElectroCraft have very complementary motion control portfolios and the integration of the companies will allow us to better service the project needs of our existing and future customers.”

Hansen’s president, Bill Poyner, adds that “the combination of North American motor design and manufacturing groups ensures that we are able to best control variables of development and production and will result in the best possible motion control solution for our customers.”

Both groups are known for custom and configured solutions and ElectroCraft says that the combined team will bring further innovation.

Hansen, founded in 1907 by an immigrant German jeweller and clock-maker, has built on its timing control roots to become a market-leader in small motor manufacturing. It has around 300 employees and its products include hysteresis and permanent magnet synchronous motors, stepper motors, DC brush motors and clock movements. It makes more than five million synchronous motors each year.

ElectroCraft is a global supplier of fractional-horsepower motor and motion control systems for both industrial and commercial applications. It employs around 260 people and specialises in application-engineered specialty products. ElectroCraft has operations in the US, Asia and Europe, including a 10,000ft2 assembly operation in Crewe, UK.

ElectroCraft is owned by DMI Technology, which bought the brand from Rockwell Automation in 2006. Rockwell had acquired ElectroCraft in 1994 as part of Reliance Electric, which had owned ElectroCraft since 1991. Previously, the company belonged to the US motor-maker Robbins & Myers, which acquired ElectroCraft in 1980, 20 years after the business was established as a manufacturer of servomotors and amplifiers.

DMI also owns two other motor manufacturers, AGI and EADmotors.
