Joint project aims to develop cyber-security certification

27 September, 2013

A group of almost 20 automation suppliers and users, including ABB, BP, Emerson, Phoenix Contact, Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric and Yokogawa, have joined forces to develop a vendor-neutral cyber-security certification system for workers in critical industries.

The system, known as the Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP), will be launched later this year. It is being developed in collaboration with the cyber-security certification supplier, Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC).

According to GIAC, one of the key challenges facing critical infrastructure industries is educating and certifying workers who need the knowledge and skills to deploy and maintain control systems securely. The GICSP is being developed to meet this need.

GIAC and its industrial partners have set up a panel of experts to identify the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to develop the new certification. The panel met for the first time in May and is now conducting a job task survey among a wide range of critical infrastructure participants to ensure the certification aligns with their job duties.

“Protecting industrial control and automation systems from constantly evolving cyber-security threats is a very challenging task shared by all involved stakeholders,” says Markus Braendle, ABB’s head of cyber-security. He describes GICSP as “an industry commitment to improve the security of our critical infrastructure”.
