Robot simulation software joins the cloud

01 March, 2023

ABB has enhanced its RobotStudio robot programming and simulation software by adding cloud support that will allow individuals and teams anywhere in the world to collaborate in real-time on robot cell designs, using any device. New functions, such as automatic version control, are said to increase transparency and productivity, while a simpler interface and intuitive navigation allow users of all skill levels to work on robotic projects.

The software – which ABB describes as “already the world’s leading robotic programming software” – will allow companies to program robots more collaboratively, while cutting the time, cost and disruption associated with physical testing and commissioning. Systems integrators and engineering teams can collaborate in real-time to design, develop and enhance robotic systems.

Now called RobotStudio Cloud, the software will allow users to keep track of changes and amendments. Knowing who edited the program and when, will save time when resolving errors and performance issues.

The cloud-based virtual controllers offer a powerful simulation tool for tuning and testing programs. By producing precise digital twins, they give developers confidence that – once installed in the real world – the robot will move precisely as it did in the simulation. This facilitates the fine-tuning and optimisation that can help reduce waste or problems when production begins.

The software’s simpler interface makes it easier to produce and change programs, allowing users with little engineering expertise to program robot applications rapidly.

ABB RobotStudio programming software has expanded into the cloud and added new functions

“Web-based tools like RobotStudio Cloud bring a new level of agility and flexibility to manufacturers in how they plan and design their robotic automation solutions,” says ABB Robotics president, Marc Segura. “Offering a simplified user experience, RobotStudio Cloud helps to increase collaboration and reduce complexity, enabling both novices and experts to push the boundaries of robotics programming.”

RobotStudio offers more than 500 productivity-enhancing functions. Automatic path planning, for example, can cut the time needed to program robots by 80%. In addition, AR (augmented reality) and VR-enabled (virtual reality) options allow users to optimise the design of robotic installations by enabling them to visualise and interact with them in a virtual 3D environment.
