Watt Drive becomes WEG Gear Systems and takes on key role

24 April, 2024

Watt Drive Antriebstechnik, the Austrian manufacturer of geared motors and drives which the Brazilian motor-maker WEG acquired in 2011, has been renamed WEG Gear Systems. As part of its new identity, the business will be upgraded to a competence centre for gear technology and will be responsible for the WEG Group's global gears and geared motors activities.

“The new company name expresses the affiliation to our parent company WEG even more clearly and further increases awareness of the WEG brand in Austria as well,” explains WEG Gear Systems’ managing director, Klaus Sirrenberg. “In this way, we can make even better use of the global presence and leading market position of our parent company to further expand our position as a provider of drive solutions and specialist in gear technology worldwide.”

The Watt business was founded in 1972 as Wustinger Antriebstechnik, initially operating as an engineering office for drive technologies. In 1976, it added its own assembly plant and production machines for small series production, followed in 1983 by its first geared motor. In 1990, the company was renamed Watt Drive Antriebstechnik and opened a new factory in Markt Piesting in southern Austria, including a production department for gear components. Watt Drive later established branches in Germany and Asia.

Following its acquisition by WEG Group in 2011 it was integrated gradually into the Group, which made major investments in converting and renovating its production halls and warehouses. In 2016, it launched the WG20 series of geared motors in ratings up to 600Nm.

The Brazilian-headquartered WEG Group is one of the world's largest manufacturers of electric motors and has greatly expanded its product range in recent years to cover the entire industrial drivetrain.
