Global motors group targets the UK

10 May, 2012

Regal Beloit, the global motor manufacturer with headquarters in the US, used the recent Drives & Controls Show to establish its identity in the UK and to launch its Marathon brand in this country.

Regal Beloit (RB) has been growing rapidly, largely through acquisitions. In recent years, it has made ten significant purchases, including two Dutch businesses  – Dutchi Motors in 2008 and Rotor in 2010 – as well as the motors operations of AO Smith in the US last year. The $875m Smith acquisition brought with it a manufacturing operation in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.

About a third of RB’s annual sales of more than $3bn now come from outside the US, and the company is planning to raise this to 50% by 2015. The company already has annual sales worth around €65m in Europe and employs about 100 people in its European industrial motors division.

RB has recently opened a warehouse and modification facility in the Netherlands (above), which it believes is the largest of its type in the world. It will supply single-, three-phase and MV machines, as well as IP23 drip-proof motors up to 600kW.

RB also holds stocks of motors in the UK. Between them, the two facilities will allow the company to offer same-day despatch on motors from fractional horsepower to Megawatt-scale machines.

RB is selling three main brands in the UK: Marathon Electric, which is targeting larger OEMs, offering them LV, MV and HV industrial and marine motors in IP 23, 55, 56 and 65 enclosures, and efficiency classes up to IE3; Rotor, which offers marine, Ex and special motors; and Leeson, whose portfolio includes small gearmotors, washdown motors, PM motors and stainless motors. The company is also supplying associated items such as inverters, worm gearboxes, brakes, encoders and slide rails.

Lucie Hodkova, who has been with Regal Beloit since 2005, has been appointed national sales manager for the UK, while Jerry Hodek is technical and operations director of Regal Beloit Europe and MD of Rotor (UK).

According to Mario Pistone, managing director of Regal Beloit Europe, the corporation is looking for further acquisitions and one area that it may expand into is frequency inverters.
