Cost-cutting multi-axis control module weighs less than 10g

Maxon has released a PCB module version of its MicroMACS6 multi-axis motion controller, designed to be integrated with custom-designed motherboards for robots and other machines. The six-axis motion controller has no power amplifiers, cutting its weight to under 10g. The 45mm-long and 30mm-wide module is less than 1cm high.
The module offers the same motion control performance as the MicroMACS6, which was launched last year, in a smaller and lighter format, and will cut costs for OEMs and integrators. A pair of M2 screws connect it to its host.
The controller is suitable for delta, Scara and mobile robots, and can also coordinate machines that rely on kinematics, such as pick-and-place applications. It integrates with DC or brushless DC (BLDC) motor controllers to modulate position, speed and current. It can control axes individually, or perform multi-axis coordination of kinematics groups. It provides functions such as path generator with sinusoidal/trapezoidal profiles, position and velocity control feed-forward, as well as position marker/touch probe.
The board has six digital inputs and two analogue inputs, all of which are freely programmable. It also has four freely-programmable digital outputs, including a 25kHz PWM capability.
For network integration and peripheral device connections, the module supports CANopen and complies with the CiA 301 CANopen application layer and 402 motion control profiles, as well as being compatible with EtherCat. The device also supports Bluetooth Low Energy.
For application programming, there is an SDK (software development kit) that includes numerous functions and program examples. Developers can program the module using a choice of languages, including MS Visual C# and MS Visual C++, as well as maxon’s easy-to-use ApossC_SDK language. Maxon’s ApossIDE installation software allows rapid set-ups.
The motion control module is compatible with Windows 10 and 7 and provides access to Windows DLL for PC in 32- and 64-bit versions. The board can also connect to a PC master via a USB CAN adaptor.
The module can operate in temperatures from –30°C to 55°C, and humidity levels up to 90%.
Maxon can supply complete motion systems, including DC and BLDC motors, gearheads, encoders, and speed and position controllers.
