Comau joins forces with Omron and Aptiv on automation technologies

The Italian industrial automation and robotics specialist Comau has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Omron Robotics aimed at accelerating the adoption and deployment of advanced industrial automation systems by manufacturers worldwide. The collaboration will focus on high-growth sectors such as electronics, semiconductors, medical manufacturing and industrial intralogistics – markets are seeing strong demand for flexible, easily deployable automation.
Comau has also announced a collaboration with the global technology giant Aptiv to explore the co-development of next-generation intelligent automation systems. They have established a framework to evaluate joint development in key areas of focus including advanced robotics, autonomous systems, and automated warehouse and logistics systems.
Comau’s partnership with Omron will combine the two companies’ complementary robotics, control and software technologies to deliver flexible, scalable automation systems for customers around the world.
Omron and Comau say that their partnership is a response to growing customer demands for scalable and adaptable automation systems that integrate into existing production lines as well as next-generation manufacturing environments. The agreement will result in a broader and more accessible offering for global customers based on the two companies’ complementary portfolios, technological capabilities and business models
Comau and Omron are viewing the partnership as a platform for future joint initiatives. Together, they are aiming to unlock new levels of operational efficiency, flexibility and performance for their customers by integrating robotics hardware, advanced control technologies, and software-driven automation, tailored to diverse manufacturing environments.

Comau’s collaboration with Aptiv (which had its origins in GM’s Delphi Automotive Systems) aims to develop next-generation robotics, industrial logistics and autonomous technologies for safer, smarter, and more cost-effective industrial automation.

The proposed collaboration combines Aptiv’s portfolio, including its Wind River edge platforms (which it acquired in 2022) and Pulse sensor and interconnect systems, with Comau’s expertise in robotics, and automation. The collaboration seeks to build on Comau’s longstanding use of Wind River’s VxWorks in its controllers and Aptiv’s use of Comau robots in its manufacturing facilities.
This initial phase of the cooperation is expected to explore high-value applications, including
- Advanced robotics Next-generation technologies for AMRs (autonomous mobile robots), collaborative robots and other autonomous platforms.
- AI-enabled warehouse and logistics automation Enhancing Comau’s Automha logistics software, using Wind River cloud and edge technologies to support AI/ML at the edge, improve system intelligence, real-time responsiveness, and lifecycle management across logistics operations.
- High-performance industrial interconnects Rugged cabling, micro and modular connectors, and cable assemblies designed for performance, durability and weight efficiency in robotic applications.
- Radar and vision-based industrial safety Alternative safety architectures integrating deterministic computing and multizone monitoring to improve worker protection, while cutting costs and system complexityAptiv’s global headquarters are in Ireland.
