Triangular connector housings cope with demands of modern machinery

The German connector manufacturer binder has developed a triangular moulding to provide strain relief, anti-twist protection and long service lives for cable connections in applications such as robotic systems and moving machinery. The moulding is being used for the first time in revised M16 cable connectors as well as M12 K- and L-coded connectors.
The new moulding combines functional advantages with a distinctive design and improves both the mechanical resilience and handling of the connectors.
In modern machinery, connectors are often exposed to continuous mechanical stresses. Vibrations and repeated bending of cables can lead to material fatigue over time. The new triangular moulding optimises force distribution in the transition area between the cable and the connector. Bending and tensile forces are dissipated more evenly, and anti-twist protection is enhanced, improving the mechanical stability of the connection.
These design features help to lengthen the service lives of the connectors, even under demanding conditions. Especially in dynamic machine structures, where cables are moving continuously, users will benefit from improved mechanical stability and process reliability, according to binder.
As well as offering mechanical benefits, the triangular mouldings also improve ergonomic handling. They provide users with a better grip during assembly and disassembly. Furthermore, the shape reduces potential dirt traps. This makes the connectors easier to clean – a particular advantage in environments exposed to dust, oil or other contaminants.
“With the triangular moulding, we have not only modernised the design of our M16 and M12 K- and L-coded cable connectors, but also enabled better grip and easier cleaning in the connection area,” says binder product manager, Sebastian Ader.
Binder is using the triangular mouldings in, among other products, its series 425 M16 cable connectors, designed to provide robust connections for signal transmission in machinery and equipment.
The connectors are available with 3 to 12 contacts and support rated voltages of up to 150V as well as rated currents of up to 3A. Thanks to protection classes IP67 and IP68 in the mated and locked condition, they are suitable for demanding environments involving dust, moisture or splash water. The contacts are gold-plated to ensure reliable electrical performance.
The connectors are available in both shielded and unshielded versions and are moulded onto the PUR cable. Standard cable lengths of 2m and 5m are available, with other lengths available on request.
In addition to its technical advantages, the new moulding also gives the connectors a clear visual differentiation.
