Siemens ties up with Snowflake to bridge the IT/OT divide

Siemens is collaborating with the AI data cloud specialist Snowflake to help manufacturers improve their efficiency, scale and AI-driven insights. The collaboration will allow them to connect OT (operational technology) data with IT data such as supply chain and financial data.
By linking Siemens Industrial Edge with Snowflake’s AI data cloud, manufacturers will be able to access plug-and-play edge applications to transfer OT data to IT systems. Siemens and Snowflake say this will allow them to improve machine performance, achieve deeper insights, increase machine availability and optimise production processes.
“This collaboration brings together the best of both worlds,” says Rainer Brehm, CEO of Factory Automation at Siemens. “Siemens has deep expertise in how to bring OT and IT together on the shop floor, while Snowflake excels in managing and analysing both large-scale OT and IT data. Together, we enable customers to bridge the IT/OT divide and scale their digital transformation across machines, lines, and factories.”

The Siemens-Snowflake collaboration is designed to tackle issues such as restricted data silos, limited transparency, and inefficient analytics. Siemens Industrial Edge will allow OT data to be integrated with IT systems by connecting to sources such as PLCs and sensors. It will also pre-process data at the edge and run transformed OT data models, such as AI models, in closed loops with production automation.
Snowflake’s platform then delivers actionable insights through AI-powered analytics and agentic AI capabilities. The result is claimed to be a measurable boost in operational efficiency, with improved machine performance, enhanced product quality, and a reduced need for maintenance.
One company that is already implementing the technology is the German manufacturing systems supplier, FFT. It is using Siemens Industrial Edge to transfer production data securely into Snowflake’s AI data cloud via its DataBridge app. It has already implemented this in its own production facilities.
