Siemens teams up with machine tool firms to develop industrial AI apps

Siemens has formed a partnership with leading machine-tool manufacturers – including Grob, Trumpf, Chiron, Renishaw, Heller, the Voith Group, and RWTH Aachen’s Machine Tool Laboratory – to allow the exchange of engineering, manufacturing and machine data, which could be used to develop new generative AI applications for industrial environments.
The collaboration marks a key step toward achieving an industry-specific AI model – the Siemens Industrial Foundation Model – which the company first described at the 2025 Hannover Messe.
The alliance is aiming to increase efficiency and innovation cycles in the manufacturing sector with the targeted use of AI technologies. One promising use in the field of machine tools is the automated creation of parts programs for machine tools. These programs could be created much faster, while code creation error rates will be reduced. In addition, programmers will be relieved of basic tasks, allowing them to focus on more complex challenges.
Other potential uses include predictive maintenance with precise machine-specific forecasts, manufacturing processes that adapt in real time to changing conditions, and energy-efficiency optimisation through the intelligent control of machine parameters.

The partnership involves the exchange of anonymised machine data in compliance with data protection and security standards. Among other things, the data will be used to develop and train AI models tailored to the requirements of industrial manufacturing. The data from the alliance will be used to create NC programs – work instructions for special manufacturing machines – automatically.
The alliance’s long-term strategy is to bring more companies on board – even beyond the machine tool industry – to leverage industrial AI across different industries.
