Motor meets 2027 US efficiency rules and cuts losses by 20%

ABB’s SD200 SP4 severe-duty will help users to stay ahead of US efficiency regulations

As US industrial motor users prepare for the Department of Energy’s 2027 motor efficiency requirements, ABB has announced a severe-duty motor that delivers Nema Premium 4 efficiency while simplifying upgrades, cutting energy consumption and reducing supply chain complexity.

The SD200 SP4 motor is compatible with ABB’s existing SD200 motors, allowing upgrades without costly redesigns.

Compared to Nema Premium motors, the new motor is claimed to reduce losses by an average of 20%, lowering electricity consumption in continuously running applications.

From 1 June, 2027, manufacturers will no longer be allowed to produce 100-250hp (74.6-186kW) motors that meet current Nema Premium efficiency standards. According to ABB, companies that delay upgrading risk longer lead times, limited product availability, last-minute redesigns and higher project costs as demand for compliant motors increases.

“ABB’s SD200 SP4 gives customers a proven, practical path to DOE compliance today before market pressure builds,” says Courtney Pickett, a product specialist at ABB Nema Motors. “Operators can transition to higher efficiency without redesigning applications, helping ensure compliance while keeping operations running.”

Based on ABB’s SD200 severe-duty platform, the SP4 motor has a heavy-duty cast iron frame, C-4140 high-strength steel shaft, Class H insulation and IP55 ingress protection, allowing it to be used in demanding sectors such as mines, chemical processing, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, and water and wastewater.

The motor combines Nema Design B performance with rugged severe-duty construction to increase energy performance without compromising reliability. The motor’s reduced heat generation is said to result in cooler operation, longer service intervals and dependable long-term operation.

Because the SD200 SP4 motor is frame-compatible with existing SD200 motors, users can replace their motors without costly equipment redesigns. Drop-in compatibility streamlines specification, installation and maintenance, while an oversized conduit box simplifies wiring access and serviceability.

The SD200 SP4 motor is available initially in two- and four-pole configurations. Six-pole configurations in the same 100-250hp range will be available later this year.
