Planetary gear and servomotor combo is ‘up to 40% shorter’

SEW-Eurodrive has combined a precision planetary gear with a synchronous servomotor to create a short, low-inertia drive for dynamic applications. It says that the PxG combination will offer advantages wherever right-angle planetary gears are used in tight spaces with high dynamic requirements.
Compared to conventional planetary servo gearmotors, the combined drive is up to 40% shorter for a comparable peak torque. SEW says they can increase productivity by up to 34% in short-cycle applications.
Three sizes of gear, in three performance classes, can be combined with two motor sizes, each in two lengths. The single-, two- and three-stage gears cover ratios from 4-220. Peak torque ratings are from 70-990Nm.
In delta robot applications, for example, the high dynamics and precision of the integrated gearmotors will allow high-speed handling in limited spaces, performing more than 200 picks per minute.
Another potential application is wire and tube bending machines, where the gearmotors can improve bending accuracy and boost throughput. Their high overload capacities and power densities help to achieve precise, synchronised positioning.
The low-noise synchronous servomotors use of the latest winding and magnet technologies, resulting in high efficiencies with low heat generation, despite the compact design.
A choice of encoder systems enable precise position feedback and flexible system integration. The gearmotor can optionally be equipped with a holding brake. A single-cable design simplifies wiring.
SEW is planning further sizes, as well as the integration of 48V technology for applications with limited energy requirements or specific grid conditions.
