Next-gen machinery drive complies with future cybersecurity regs

ABB has announced a next-generation machinery drive with integrated cybersecurity capabilities that will help machine-builders to comply with upcoming EU Machinery Regulations, due to come into effect in 2027. The ACS380-E drive enables fast “cold commissioning” and firmware updates via USB-C without needing an external power supply or option cards. It will initially be available in ratings up to 22kW, 400V, with other ratings and options to follow.
The drive has been engineered to speed up the commissioning, installation, wiring and assembly of industrial machinery applications, while supporting future compliance with stringent cybersecurity regulations. It has two embedded Ethernet ports and supports selectable protocols (Profinet IO RT, Ethernet/IP and Modbus TCP/IP) as standard, avoiding the need for separate option modules, thus reducing complexity and cutting installation times.
The USB-C commissioning and firmware access via Ethernet streamlines set-ups and allows the drive to be kept up-to-date in terms of cybersecurity.

From 2026, the drives will support all common types of rotary motor with voltages from 100-600V, making them suitable for use around the globe. They will also integrate with all major automation systems, including ABB’s AC500 PLCs. The compact drives will fit into confined cabinet spaces.
The drives are compatible with ABB’s Drive Composer software including the new Drive Composer 3 version, simplifying the monitoring and managing of equipment, and offering adaptive programming tools and rapid offline configuration capabilities.
