ABB takes stake in Dutch machine monitoring specialist

26 September, 2022

ABB is taking a 10% stake in Samotics, a Dutch specialist in analysing the health of rotating machines, and has entered a long-term strategic partnership with the company to provide enhanced condition-monitoring services. They aim to reach the next level of condition-monitoring by co-developing advanced digital services focused on energy efficiency and operational resilience. As a first step, ABB will integrate Samotics’ plug-and-play monitoring technologies into its portfolio by the end of 2022 as part of its services for rotating equipment.

Samotics’ AI-driven Sam4 technology, based on electrical signature analysis (ESA), does not need field-mounted sensors to monitor motor-driven industrial equipment, and can be deployed on machines located in harsh and submerged environments. The scalable system is already used in the water, steel, and chemical sectors, with thousands of assets being monitored.

The technology is said to be complementary to ABB’s existing sensor-based Ability condition-monitoring service that analyses the health and performance of rotating equipment. The companies plan to combine their capabilities to deliver more insights into machine health and energy efficiency.

Ultimately, they hope to develop a system that uses both sets of data to provide industrial users with more detailed views of the health of their assets, allowing them to make better decisions to optimise maintenance, improve reliability and cut downtime.

“With Samotics, we share the ambition to co-develop digital services that will offer even greater insight across a wider range of applications to help our customers taking better decisions,” says Adrian Guggisberg, president of ABB Motion Services.

Samotics’ machine monitoring technology does not need sensors, making it ideal for harsh environments

“Entering into a strategic partnership with ABB will open doors with potential customers around the world and help us scale our business,” adds Samotics CEO, Jasper Hoogeweegen.
