BGEN buys Radway to boost its industrial automation activities

15 September, 2022

BGEN, the multi-discipline engineering business previously known as Boulting, has acquired Radway Control Systems to strengthen its industrial automation offering. The purchase will support BGEN’s ambition to expand in sectors including renewables and steel, and boost its presence in the automation aftermarket and service sector.

Radway, founded in 1994 as J&J Automation Services, specialises in designing and implementing automation, control and information systems for industries including automotive, chemicals, metals, renewables and water. Around 30 Radway employees, including directors Jon Taylor and Andrew Stainsby, will join BGEN, and Radway’s Stoke-on-Trent headquarters will become part of BGEN’s network of UK regional offices. The transition will be overseen by Ian Oliver, managing director of technology at BGEN, and it expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2023.

The acquisition “supports our growth ambitions” says Oliver. “Radway Control Systems has some great experience in the industrial automation and digitalisation space, and we’re looking forward to integrating the team into our operations.”

Last year, Warrington-based Boulting rebranded as BGEN and promoted Robin Whitehead from managing director of its technology business to CEO as part of an ambitious growth strategy. Since then, it has opened a new operation in Nigeria as part of plans to expand its global operations, and has expended its workforce from 860 to around 1,000. It is aiming for a turnover of around £175m this year.

Whitehead: exciting growth opportunities

“When we rebranded to BGEN we stated we wanted to be recognised as an independent market leader in the provision of world-class multi-disciplinary engineering solutions for UK and international customers,” says Whitehead. “Strategic acquisitions were part of that realising that vision, and the addition of Radway Control Systems provides excellent synergies with our existing technology team and exciting growth opportunities.”
