App will help 100,000 Siemens employees to return safely to work

24 July, 2020

100,000 Siemens employees working at 600 locations in 30 countries are getting access to an app that combines location, usage and smart building data with their own personal requirements to ensure that they can return safely to their workplaces following the Covid-19 pandemic.

The app, developed by Siemens’ Comfy workplace technology subsidiary, is being deployed in two phases. In the first, a simplified version will provide information about each employee’s office location, including general and location-specific Covid-19 updates and health regulations affecting their return to work. In the second phase, smart office functions will be added.

Siemens says that the pandemic has accelerated the need for digital tools, while highlighting the importance of office space for collaboration between employees. The app will give its employees information about their office to help them make informed decisions about how and when they can return safely to work. It will allow occupancy limits to be defined and met, ensuring that the offices comply with local return-to-work regulations on physical distancing.

“Our priority is to protect our people so they can return to the workplace safely and confidently wherever they are,” says Siemens’ deputy CEO, Roland Busch. “By using smart office technologies, we can reshape how we work. Our Comfy app supports our new mobile working model, by enabling employees to better plan when they choose to work from the office.”

In the second phase of the rollout, workers will be able to reserve rooms and desks, navigate offices and campuses with maps, locate their co-workers and personalise the temperature and lighting levels. There will also be an option to deploy a network of IoT sensors from the Siemens smart building subsidiary Enlighted which, when integrated with Comfy, will allow employees to view the occupancy of desks, rooms and offices in real time.

Siemens says that its Comfy app will help staff to return safely to their offices after the coronavirus shutdown

The rollout of the app is being overseen by Siemens Real Estate, which is responsible for the company’s real estate activities. “We are proud that Siemens is the first blue-chip company which is starting to digitise its workplace environment on a global scale by using its own technology,” says CEO, Zsolt Sluitner.

Siemens says that its app will allow businesses to keep their staff informed and productive while providing a workspace that is safe and compliant with local regulations.
