Gateways open an easy path to IIoT via MQTT and OPC UA

19 November, 2018

HMS Industrial Networks has announced a pair of gateway families that support MQTT (Message Queue Telemetry Transport) and OPC UA, enabling data to flow between equipment on any major industrial network, and IIoT applications.

The Anybus Communicator IIoT gateway provides data from devices on serial protocols and CAN, while the Anybus X-gateway IIoT integrates data from fieldbuses and industrial Ethernet networks. No programming is needed and the configuration logic is the same as for HMS’ existing Communicator and X-gateway products.

The data can be generated by a single device, several machines, or entire automation systems, and can come from new or existing equipment.

By using the free Anybus Configuration Manager tool, users can configure, convert and tag data for use in IT-systems or IIoT applications. When setting up the IT connection, the gateways can be presented either as MQTT Clients or OPC-UA servers.

HMS says that the standalone gateways will ensure a high level of security between OT (operational technology) and IT systems. They only allow one-way data flows from OT to IT, so connected equipment is isolated from potential attacks from the IT side. For example, instead of being connected directly to an IT system, a PLC on an industrial network can connect and transmit data safely and securely via the gateways, without the risk of attack.
