Manufacturers want to standardise push-pull M12 connectors

10 May, 2017

Molex, Phoenix Contact, Murrelektronik and Binder have agreed to work together to drive the standardisation of M12 push-pull connectors which interlock automatically when plugged in, avoiding the need for traditional screw connections. The interlock is based on Molex’s Brad Ultra-Lock technology, which is designed to bring the ease push-pull connections to IP67/68/69K sealed connections. It can be used without tools, simplifying mounting, especially in confined spaces.

Under the cooperation agreement, users will be able to choose between push-pull connectors from different suppliers, and their products will be physically compatible.

The push-pull technology is said to ensure a reliable interlock between field and device connectors, even in harsh conditions. The positive locking design and radial O-ring seals protect against water ingress and reduce the risk of signals being interrupted by shock and vibration. The seal is said to perform better and to be more reliable than threaded connectors.

“Unlike the seal torque integrity of traditional threaded connectors, which is operator-dependent, Ultra-Lock connectors form a secure seal simply by aligning and pushing,” says Molex’s global product manager, Michael Meckl.  “A superior seal means fewer intermittent signals, less downtime for industrial operations, and increased productivity.”

The proposed standardised M12 push-pull connector design is based on Molex's Brad Ultra-Lock technology

The positive-locking design avoids the need to turn a coupler and eliminates intermittent signals caused by harsh conditions or installer errors. The technology, designed to connect sensors, actuators and other control devices, is claimed to cut the time taken to commission machinery and automation systems by up to 80%, as well as reducing the cost of modifying installations by up to 50%.

The IP69K-rated, stainless-steel repeatable seal used in Molex’s Brad Ultra-Lock connectors can withstand high-pressure washdowns up to 1,500 psi (103 bar). The connections are rated to 250V AC/DC, and can carry up to 4A.
