Stainless-steel IE4 geared motor is 'the world's first'

06 May, 2014

At the recent Hannover Fair, Bauer Gear Motor unveiled what it claims is the world's first modular, stainless-steel, IE4-efficiency geared motor. The new machine, based on Bauer’s permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and aseptic drive technologies, is said to combine the benefits of both and is suitable for use in hygiene-critical applications where frequent washdowns and the presence of people could damage specialist coatings.

At present, there are few extra-high-efficiency geared motors that meet the special hygiene demands of industries such as pharmaceuticals and the food & beverage sector. Often, specialist components have to be specified that will withstand the regular cleaning regimes and guarantee clean operation without risk of contamination.

Bauer – part of Altra Industrial Motion – argues that PMSM machines offer much higher efficiencies than induction motors, even under partial-load conditions. In real applications, they have been shown to achieve energy savings of more than 40% compared to standard asynchronous motors.

Bauer claims that its stainless-steel IE4 geared motor is the first of its type

The new stainless-steel modular geared motor has surfaces which slope at an angle of at least three degrees to prevent the formation of dirt deposits, and to allow the run-off of cleaning agents and water. The stainless-steel construction eliminates the risk of the hygiene rating being compromised as a result of an impact or prolonged periods of use in heavy washdown environments.
