Distributed drives integrate with geared motors

Siemens is pushing forward with its Integrated Drives Systems theme with several developments that it plans to unveil at the Hannover Fair in April. For example, it will launch a distributed inverter designed to be used as a motor-integrated inverter for its Simogear geared motors, and will present a series of integrated geared motors with planetary gearboxes.

The new Sinamics G110M integrated inverter for Simogear geared motors (shown below) is a modular system that is said to be easy to install, commission and operate. It will save space and the optimised matching of the inverter to the geared motor will result in high efficiencies, particularly for conveyor applications, according to Siemens.

The IP66-protected inverter uses pluggable connections for all input/outputs, and cuts cabling by looping through the 400V AC, 24V DC and communication signals. Braking resistors are built in, along with Quick Stop and limit switch functions. A Safe Torque Off safety function can be activated via a failsafe input and Profisafe, without needing extra components. Modbus RTU, Profibus and Profinet/Ethernet IP communication profiles are supported, and the drives can be incorporated into Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation Portal.

The second development combines the G110M inverters with geared motors using planetary gears. The integrated drive system consists of a Flender SIP planetary gearbox, a Simogear geared motor and a G110M. This integration is said to save weight and mounting space and to provide a high level of flexibility.

The SIP gearboxes are particularly suitable for applications in which high transmission ratios are needed in the low-to-medium torque range. The integrated system offers various mounting options including brakes, encoders and backstops, and is available for common motor standards such as IEC, Nema, CCC and CSA. Both coaxial and a right-angle shaft arrangements are possible.
