Industrial security router protects against cyber-attacks

14 January, 2014

Belden has announced a device that it describes as “the Swiss Army knife of security routers”. The Hirschmann Eagle One router is designed to protect industrial systems against network incidents and cyber-attacks, thus improving security, reliability and performance.

“We asked our customers about their needs and challenges, and built a device that can be used in nearly all industrial situations, including extremely hazardous industries like oil and gas operations,” says Frank Williams, Belden’s senior product manager for security. “Whether you’re looking to upgrade or enhance your existing security features, or even take the first step, this device will help guard networks from accidental network events and unforeseen security threats.”

Belden claims that the router offers “a unique combination of features to advance data security in industrial automation”. These include:

•  the ability to withstand harsh industrial conditions in almost any environment, especially areas dealing with explosive and hazardous materials;

•  the ability to operate in temperatures from -40°C to +70°C;

•  compliance with global standards and certifications, including the Atex directives;

Belden says that its new industrial security router can be used in almost any industrial situation

•  ease of integration through a “firewall learning mode” that reduces installation risks such as network interruptions and configuration errors;

•  redundancy features including layer 2 and layer 3 functions that ensure switchover to a standby device in the event of a fault or a failure;

•  the ability to configure settings offline to eliminate contact with a live device; and

•  reduced operating costs due to a low power requirement.
