Servodrives are '25% cheaper than rivals'

03 January, 2014

A new range of servodrives from the German manufacturer Metronix has been designed to be about 25% cheaper than comparable European drives. The company has achieved this using various techniques, including embedding features that would usually be provided using expansion slots. It has also split the electronics across two PCBs, thus reducing the number of layers needed and allowing single-sided component mounting.

The Metronix blueServo range consists initially of six panel-mounting, single- and three-phase drives with continuous output ratings from 0.5–6kVA. A universal real-time Ethernet capability means that the drives can be integrated into systems using EtherCat, Profinet, Sercos III or Ethernet/IP, as well as CanOpen.

The drives can connect directly to resolvers, analogue/digital incremental encoders, and single- or multi-turn absolute encoders, such as Hiperface or EnDat. They also support the Hiperface DSL interface that allows single-cable connections between a drive and motor. The drives have built-in line filters and brake resistors and support the Safe Torque Off safety function.

Metronix has shaved costs from its blueServo range

A spin-off of the dual-PCB design is that it will allow Metronix to supply custom drives that combine its power stages with OEMs’ application-specific control electronics.
