Electrical cylinder ‘combines the best of hydraulics and electronics’

Parker Hannifin has announced an “electro thrust cylinder” which, it says, combines the advantages of hydraulics and electronics, and can deliver thrust forces of up to 56kN, travel speeds of up to 666mm/s and accelerations of up to 10m/s2

The ETH100 cylinder is based on a precision-ground ballscrew with screw leads of 10mm or 20mm. It is said to offer a high force density (force per frame size), low friction, an efficiency of up to 90%, smooth operation over the whole speed range, and a long service life.

There are three frame sizes. Standard travel lengths are from 100–2,000mm, but the cylinder is also configurable in steps of 1mm. With a repeatability of up to 0.05mm, the ETH100 is suitable for applications requiring precise motion, positioning, force control, setting and actuating – such as material forming, presses, food processing and packaging machinery.

The cylinder can be used with parallel or inline motors. A choice of mounting options allows users to combine the cylinder with a variety of motors and gearboxes of their choice. There is also a selection of rod end configurations.

A built-in anti-rotation device simplifies the integration of the cylinder into user applications. A central lubrication port helps to reduce maintenance and downtime.

Sensors and cables can be inserted into a groove in the ETH profile, and then protected by a cover. This ensures a smooth surface for easy cleaning and safe handling.

The cylinder offers IP54 protection as standard, but is also available in IP65 with an additional coating to protect it against aggressive chemicals.
