£23m UK research consortium will examine IoT issues

An interdisciplinary research hub has been created in the UK to drive research into the Internet of Things (IoT). A consortium of nine UK universities will work together over the next three years to explore issues affecting the IoT in terms of privacy, ethics, trust, reliability, acceptability, and security (Petras).

Siemens links geared motors and motion controls in the UK

Taiwan’s Adlink buys UK IoT specialist, PrismTech

The Taiwanese automation supplier, Adlink Technology, is buying the British IoT (Internet of Things) specialist PrismTech for a reported $16.6m. PrismTech, established in 1992, has about 70 employees and a turnover of around $10m. It will operate as a “semi-autonomous” business within Adlink.

Schneider Electric and Aveva call off their £550m merger

Swedish group snaps up Acorn Industrial Services

The Swedish industrial conglomerate, Axel Johnson International, has acquired the UK industrial parts distributor, Acorn Industrial Services Group, for an undisclosed sum. The deal strengthens Axel Johnson’s position in the UK market and expands its bearings and transmissions business.

‘Every £1 invested in UK automation could deliver £49 return’

Investing an extra £1.2bn in automation and robotics could add more than £60bn to the UK economy over the coming decade – a £49 return on every £1 invested – according to a new report from Barclays bank. Such an investment, it adds, would expand the UK manufacturing sector to reach a value of £191bn by 2025 – a £38bn increase on the current value – as well as safeguarding 105,800 jobs across the economy.

£350k grant helps hydraulics group to enter automation

Group HES, the Gloucester-based hydraulics engineering company, is expanding into the industrial automation and motion control market with the help of a £350,000 government grant which it will match, resulting in a total investment of £700,000 over the coming three years.

N Ireland motors and gears company invests £2.2m

The Northern Ireland drives, motors and gears supplier JJ Loughran, is investing £2.2m to expand into new industry sectors and regions across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The investment – including a £281,090 contribution from Invest Northern Ireland – is expected to create 37 new jobs at the company’s Cookstown, County Tyrone, headquarters over the coming three years.

Moog’s industrial group moves into a new UK home

Turkish switchgear maker sets up shop in the UK

The Turkish switchgear manufacturer, Emas, has set up a UK subsidiary in Stafford, to support its growing UK customer base. The company has invested in stock to support the UK control panel and machine building sectors, and has taken on three staff with more than 30 years of experience, led by managing director, Nelson Finan. The company is setting up a UK distributor network.

Robots will show off their moves at the 2016 Drives Show

Next April’s Drives & Controls Show in Birmingham, UK, will, for the first time, include a dedicated area where some of the latest industrial robot technology will be demonstrated. Interest in robotics is growing rapidly as prices come down and capabilities increase. “The technology is moving ahead incredibly quickly,” says exhibition director, Doug Devlin, “and the time is right for us to launch a robotics demonstration area”.

Welsh drives-maker targets 50% growth with £5.6m factory

The Welsh drives-maker, Invertek Drives, has announced plans to expand into a new factory that will boost its production capacity from 150,000 to more than 400,000 drives per year, and create about 50 new jobs in the process. The 5,000m2 factory – which the Welsh Government is building at a cost of £5.6m – will be next to Invertek’s existing headquarters and production facility in Welshpool, which the company leases from the Government.
