Motor has global ambitions

ABB has developed a motor that complies with all of the key technical, safety and efficiency standards in force around the world. The Global Motor is designed to appeal to OEMs serving a variety of markets, as well as allowing multinational users to standardise their motor purchases and to avoid the need to buy new motors when they move equipment around the world.

"Manufacturers no longer have to worry about specifying IEC motors, depending on whether they are for use in the US or elsewhere in the world," explains Steve Ruddell, general manager of ABB`s drives and motors business in the UK. "One product now carries a full package of certifications."

The motors are available in aluminium IEC frame sizes up to 75kW, and are rated for voltages in use around the world, at 50Hz or 60Hz. They have been designed to meet EU and Canadian safety standards, and US (Epact), European (Eff1) and Canadian efficiency standards, among others.

"The features packed into every single motor in this range, historically would require three separate motors to comply with local or national standards," says Ruddell. "Those individual features, components and specifications are now combined and packaged into one, single, universally safe and efficient motor."
