Motors network offers lifecycle support

ABB has joined forces with 12 independent motor suppliers to form a chain of AC motor specialists aimed at saving inventory and cutting downtime and energy costs. Members of the ABB Motor Service Partners scheme will supply motors and provide advice on maintenance, reliability, energy efficiency and stock management.

"The key to this move is improved service --- in particular offering service on the customer`s terms," says Nigel Evenett, ABB`s manager for motors and rotating machines. "The strategy makes us the first motor manufacturer to be able to offer full lifecycle support for our products. We are taking responsibility for our products in the field."

"As a supplier, we have found it frustrating having to rely on independent distributors without being able to influence the service they give," says Evenett. "ABB Motor Service Partners will be trained and backed by us, bringing the quality of service we want to deliver, down to the factory floor."

ABB will ensure that training, stocks and other aspects of the service are set to the same standards across the network. The participating suppliers will act as the extended arm of ABB towards its own customers.

Cost-saving is a vital element of the scheme. "Most users are not aware of how much their motors are costing them," Evenett explains. "The purchase price is only a very small part of the equation." Participants in the scheme will install and maintain motors to get the lowest cost over the life cycle, he adds. This includes carrying out maintenance, energy surveys and condition monitoring.

All partners will be required to stock motors up to 37kW - Evenett claims customers will be able to get delivery within three hours if needed. Motors up to 132kW will be available within 24 hours, and machines up to 400kW within 72 hours. A pool of less common parts will be shared between the partners, and all will have access to ABB`s central stock in Germany, with some 300,000 items available at 72 hours` notice.
