Siemens has announced an AC inverter which, it claims, has a power density up to 40% higher than rival systems, and needs 30% less installation space. The Sinamics G120C has been optimised for applications in small control cabinets, on or near machinery.

The sensorless vector inverter (shown above), which spans ratings from 0.55–18.5kW, is aimed at OEM machine-builders and other users requiring ready-to-run drives. Siemens asserts that the drive sets new standards in its class for size, commissioning times, simplicity of operation, ease of servicing and integrated functions.

The inverter is equipped with a double safe input and offers a safe torque-off (STO) function without needing external devices. A memory card port makes fast series commissioning possible. The drive can also be commissioned using an optional operator panel, or from a PC via a built-in USB interface. Plug-in terminals reduce installation times.

The inverter supports Profibus and can also be integrated into other communications networks using the USS protocol, an RTU mode or CANbus. It is designed to operate in ambient temperatures of up to 60°C.
