PM geared motors `can halve energy use`

Leroy-Somer has extended its PM (permanent magnet) motor portfolio to include geared motors with torque ratings up to 14.5kNm. The Dyneo 3000 geared motors are based on its LSRPM PM synchronous motors, combined with helical gears which have mechanical efficiencies above 95%.

When used with variable speed drives, the PM motors can deliver efficiencies higher than IE3 asynchronous motors under all operating conditions (variable speed, fixed or variable load, constant or quadratic torque, or constant power).

The geared motors can be located close to the transmission shaft, eliminating the need for intermediate mechanical devices such as pinions, chains or belts, thus producing additional efficiency savings of 15–20%, according to Leroy-Somer. Another attraction is that the motor is about half the size of a conventional induction motor, cutting the system weight by about 20%.

Leroy cites the example of a conveying application operating for at least eight hours a day. The potential energy saving of using the PM geared motors in such an application could be 30–50%, it says. Similarly in a round-the-clock mixing application, the savings could be 15–20%.

Leroy is offering three types of gearbox: axial-output versions in five sizes, with output torques from 210–3,150Nm and power ratings from 4.8–80kW; helical-bevel versions in eight sizes, with output torques from 250–14,500Nm and power ratings from 4.8–100kW; and parallel output versions in eight sizes, with output torques from 250–14,500Nm and power ratings from 4.8–100kW.
