Slim solid-state relays `last 20 times longer`

18 December, 2010

Omron has developed a 6mm-wide solid-state relay that, it claims, will last longer and be more reliable than electromechanical relays in this slim format. Unlike electromechanical relays, there are no moving parts to wear out or fail, and contact bounce which can cause imprecise switching and circuit failures is eliminated.

Omron says that the new G3RV slim relays (below) will last up to 20 times longer than electromechanical relays, and will operate with switching times of a few milliseconds – the time it takes to power an LED on and off.

Other advantages are said to include a high inrush current capability, high surge current ratings, high isolation voltages, and quiet operation with good EMI noise reduction. Also, the relay cannot fail as a result of contacts arcing or welding.

Power switching in G3RV relays with DC outputs is managed by a Mosfet output, which has good heat dissipation characteristics. The space-saving relays can be connected to a PLC in a few seconds using click connectors. Large contact areas and non-bendable pins ensure sturdy, reliable connections. LEDs indicate when they are in an energised state.

The relays are available for 24V AC/DC and 230V AC supplies. Output load currents are up to 3A, and inrush currents up to 30A.
