Dr Graeme Philp has been appointed chief executive of Gambica, the organisation that represents the UK’s instrumentation, control, automation and laboratory technology industries. Dr Philp, who was formerly chief executive of the MTL Instruments Group, succeeds Geoff Young, who is retiring after leading the organisation for 25 years.

Announcing the appointment, Gambica president John Bailey said: “I am delighted to secured Graeme as the new chief executive of Gambica. Together we will build on the excellent organisation that Geoff developed and strive to increase still further, its value and relevance to members in our fast-changing business environment.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff Young for his excellent leadership of the organisation over the last quarter of a century,” Bailey (above, left, with Philp) added.

Philp was managing director of Measurement Technology from 1991 until 1995, when he was appointed chief executive of the MTL Instruments Group. In 2008, he led the sale of MTL to Cooper Industries for £143m. Following this sale, he stayed on until April 2009 to help integrate MTL with its new owner and to encourage co-operation between Cooper’s various r&d activities.

“I am excited at the prospect of leading an organisation like Gambica with such a proud history of representing our industry,” Philp says. “I have enjoyed a challenging and rewarding career in instrumentation and automation for the last 33 years and I relish this opportunity to put something back into the industry by representing it in the UK and Europe to the best of my ability.”
