PM motors can pay for themselves `in months`

09 July, 2010

The recent Drives & Controls show marked the UK debut of Yaskawa’s EcoiPM range of high-efficiency permanent magnet motors, first seen at the SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany late last year. When used with the matching V1000 inverters (shown below), the motors will meet the new IE3 efficiency classification.

Although the motors cost more than traditional designs, Yaskawa says that their energy cost savings will be substantial, with payback often being achieved in a few months.

The permanent magnet motors are typically two frame sizes smaller than equivalent IE2 asynchronous motors. The smallest PM motor has a 56A frame size, while the largest has a 90B frame. They are available in B3 or flange-mount versions, in 200V and 400V ratings.

The V1000 inverters can control the PM motors without feedback, making the combination suitable for use in demanding working environments.
