Drive package `cuts consumption by up to 30%`

20 April, 2010

At the recent Hannover Fair, the German drives-maker Lenze was promoting a package of drive components – including new three-phase AC motors, decentralised frequency inverters, and high-efficiency gearboxes – which, it claims, can cut energy consumption by up to 30%.

A key element of the L-force package is the MF range of IE2 motors which are optimised for inverter control and can produce the same output as conventional three-phase motors up to two frame sizes larger, according to Lenze. The company adds that the motors’ low axle heights result in low mass inertia which, in turn, means that they can deliver similar efficiencies, compactness and dynamics to servomotors. Their moment of inertia is said to be lower than that of standard motors, further reducing the energy consumed when speeds are varied.

Another key element in the package is the decentralised 8400 motec frequency inverter that mounts on the motors and offers an “eco mode” of operation that varies their magnetising current. During partial load operation, three-phase AC motors are usually supplied with a higher magnetising current than necessary. The eco mode adjusts the magnetisation current to cut energy demand by up to 30%, according to Lenze.

The final element in the drive package is a series of direct-fitting compact and efficient right-angle or coaxial gearboxes, said to transfer energy with minimal losses.
