ABB claims that it is the first motor manufacturer to be granted a licence to use the IECEx mark shows that a product has been granted an IECEx Certificate of Conformity. This certification, introduced in 2008, confirms that the product is suitable for use in explosive atmospheres and that it has been manufactured under systems subject to continuing surveillance by certification bodies.

The mark (above) also means that products can be supplied in any country participating in the IECEx scheme, without needing additional tests.

ABB will be allowed to use the IECEx mark on various low and high voltage motors, with hazardous area protection types including flameproof Ex d, non-sparking Ex nA, pressurised Ex p, and dust-tight Ex tD.
 
ABB says that the licence will enhance its ability to market its products globally. It complements the company’s existing ATEX approval, which is based on two EU Directives governing the use of equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.
