Servo drives boast `industry leading` performance

16 December, 2009

At the recent SPS/IPC/Drives show in Germany, Danaher Motion subsidiary Kollmorgen unveiled a new generation of Ethernet-based servo drives that cater for applications ranging from basic torque and velocity applications, to indexing and multi-axis programmable motion. The AKD (Advanced Kollmorgen Drive) family initially covers continuous currents from 3–34A rms (9–48A peak), with versions up to an “industry-leading” rating of 96A continuous (192A peak) planned for later in 2010.

With a 27-bit resolution and dual-processor architecture, the drives provide torque loop updates in 0.67µs, while velocity and position loop timings of 62.5µs and 125µs respectively are claimed to be the best in the market, allowing the drives to adapt immediately to changing load conditions.

The drives support a wide variety of feedback systems (including Endat, BiSS, SinCos and Hiperface) and Ethernet motion buses (EtherCat, CANopen and Modbus/TCP) as standard without needing option cards.

They will operate on a plug-and-play basis with Kollomorgen’s servomotors for rapid set-ups. A six-channel, real-time software oscilloscope aids commissioning and fault diagnoses. The drives’ compact size (168 x  57 x 153mm) will allow OEMs to reduce the size of their machines or to boost their power without increasing their size.
