Busbar connectors `cut power losses by up to 25%`

Multi-Contact has developed a novel connector for laminated busbars which, it claims, can reduce power losses from leakage inductance by up to 25%. The Cliplam CL-T connectors are said to save space, eliminate the risk of mis-wiring, cut installation and maintenance costs, and reduce the amount of copper required in the busbars. They are available for current ratings from 400–1,600A, and in lengths up to 150mm.

The electrical contacts are provided by torsion spring contact elements which create independent lines of current. These parallel current lines lead to a significant reduction in the electrical resistance and inductance of the connection, compared to bolted busbar connections.

The low-contact-resistance connectors, which can connect two systems of double-pole insulated busbars, are attached to busbars by two clips without needing fixings. The busbars can be 2–5mm thick and need to be silver-plated. The rackable, plastic-framed connectors are said to have a high resistance to shock and vibration, and have a self-cleaning action when mating.
