PACs expand integrated architecture capabilities

18 September, 2008

Rockwell Automation has introduced three programmable automation controllers (PACs) and added more than 30 capabilities and to its Integrated Architecture (IA) production control and information system.

The Allen Bradley CompactLogix L23 PACs (below) are designed to provide IA capabilities in a compact package. The PACs, which have differing I/O and communication configurations, can be expanded using Allen-Bradley 1769 Compact I/O.

The IA enhancements include new safety tools for use with Rockwell’s Allen-Bradley GuardLogix PACs, providing specific metal-forming instructions designed to improve ease of use, simplify diagnostics and streamline maintenance on metal-forming press-control and safety applications.

Rockwell’s Integrated Architecture is a production control and information system which integrates control, networking, visualisation and information technologies. It can be used for discrete, process, batch, motion, drive and safety applications.

Rockwell has also announced a vacuum contactor controller said to outperform traditional electromechanical controls and to provide digital control for a wide array of contactors, including devices with ratings up to 800A with electrical or mechanical latching. The Allen-Bradley IntelliVAC Plus controller (below) is said to allow more consistemt vacuum contactor performance and to minimise the need for external control circuitry and wiring. It has been designed for use with the company`s Bulletin 1500 and 1900 MV motor controls. Up to four of the controllers can be connected via RS-485 for multi-contactor control schemes.

Another announcement from Rockwell describes a new generation of medium voltage motor controls up to 15kV. The Allen-Bradley OneGear products use both vacuum contactor and circuit-breaker switching technologies and offer remote monitoring, diagnostics, and comprehensive motor protection. The range includes a full-voltage, non-reversing controller.
