Tiny module offers a choice of real-time Ethernet protocols

28 April, 2008

The German communications specialist Hilscher has developed a communication interface for integrating real-time Ethernet functions into equipment such as controls, drives, and simple actuators or sensors. The netIC module can be used to provide connections for any two of the following – Profinet, PowerLINK, Ethernet IP, SERCOS III, EtherCAT, Modbus and TCP/IP – using simple software adaptations.

The module (shown above) incorporates all of the necessary components – including a switch, a hub and a 3.3V power supply – in an area of 45 x 25mm. The development is based on Hilscher’s netX network controller which is optimised for communication and data throughput.
