High-efficiency disc motors are `75% shorter`

Portescap has developed a range of flat, miniature, brushless DC motors which, it claims, are the most efficient of their type, as well as being 75% shorter and 90% lighter than conventional flat motors. The 32mm-diameter and 11.7mm-thick nuvoDisc motors have a slotless design that eliminates cogging, for smooth, vibration-free operation, and are said to maintain a stable speed better than conventional flat motors.

The motors (shown above) are capable of speeds of up to 50,000 rpm and continuous output torques of up to 10mNm. Because of their high efficiency, the motors are said to draw less current than normal, reducing power supply demands and minimising the amount of heat generated.

Portescap also asserts that the brushless motors are more reliable than brushed designs because mechanical wear is lower, and that the new motors will deliver "superior continuous speed". The Swiss company, part of the Danaher Motion group, adds that the nuvoDisc devices are easy to integrate into applications.

A slotted version is available for applications that need detent torque, such as HVAC damper controls.
