400 drives line up for the Athens Olympics

01 January, 2004

Danfoss Motion Controls has raced away with orders for more than 400 drives for sports venues, hotels and other facilities for the 2004 Olympics being staged in Athens, Greece, this summer.

One of the most impressive new venues, the €45m Galatsi athletics hall (shown above) will use 27 VLT drives for air-handling duties, while the 52,000m˛ press centre will require more than 40 drives for chiller pumps, cooling tower fans and air handling. Other drives will help to pump sewage at the equestrian centre.

Away from the sporting facilities, the five-star Athens Hilton hotel is being expanded to 962 beds, requiring more than 100 drives for air-handling, fan and condenser pump duties.

A further 128 VSDs have already been supplied for a complete restructuring of the Athens waste and water treatment plant to cater for the vast influx of visitors. This is part of a long-term project expected to continue until 2020 which will demand even more drives in future.
