Parker buys MTS` custom motors business

01 May, 2003

Parker Hannifin has bought Minnesota-based MTS Automation, which makes brushless motors, analogue and digital amplifiers, digital and servo controllers, and linear motors, mainly for the OEM market. The terms of the deal have not been revealed.

"The custom motor business is one that we have admired for some time, so we`re very pleased to add this high-value technology to our portfolio," says Bob Bond, president of Parker`s automation group. "The MTS product line complements our ability to be a leading automation-solution provider for a broad range of global machine builders."

According to Sidney Emery, chief executive of MTS Systems Corporation, the automation division was "no longer strategic to the overall direction of the company". He adds that MTS "will continue to focus on our core force and motion control products and markets where we have solid market positions and a breadth of opportunities for profitable growth".

MTS, which was founded in 1991 as Custom Servo Motors, will become part of Parker`s Compumotor division. Last year, the MTS business generated sales worth $23m, but recorded a loss for the year because of significant restructuring and inventory write-off costs.
