Siemens claims pole position in software sales

Siemens claims to be leading the $550m global market for industrial software with sales of around $100m. By combining its own sales figures with those of outside analysts, Siemens concludes that second position is held by Invensys with sales of some $73m, followed by Rockwell with almost $70m.

Siemens now has more than 9,000 software developers working on industrial products such as PLC programming, HMI and industrial networking software. Siemens as a whole now employs around 27,000 software personnel - more than Microsoft - and some 60% of its products are software-based. Dr Klaus Wucherer, Siemens board member responsible for the industrial sector, predicts that this proportion will rise to 80% by 2010.

The 1999/2000 fiscal year was the most profitable in Siemens` 153-year history with profits of €3.38bn (£2.14bn), 81% up on the year before. Global sales by the automation and drives group were €7.9bn (£5bn), compared to €7.1bn (£4.55bn) a year before.

Siemens is buying the Italian group Orsi which specialises in MES (Manufacturing Execution System) software for industrial markets, focusing on software for optimising manufacturing operations. Under the Siemens Orsi name, the new subsidiary will become the global MES competence centre for the Automation and Drives group.
