Multi-DoF absolute encoder system supports advanced positioning

Renishaw has launched an absolute multi-DoF (multiple degrees of freedom) optical encoder system that combines its Resolute absolute encoder read-heads with one or more of its RXMA30 1.5D scales. This combination allows advanced multi-DoF position measurements with up to six degrees of freedom (6DoF), making it suitable for high-performance motion systems, where accuracy, speed and repeatability are critical.
The RXMA30 scales ensure repeatable measurements under demanding thermal and dynamic conditions. Separate scale tracks can measure motion in the X and Y axes, without needing complex signal processing. The absolute encoder technology removes the need for homing routines, which are often difficult on Y axes because users have limited control of the motion in this direction.
The technology allows machine-builders to detect and compensate for error sources – such as the straightness of linear guideways, small translational deviations, and rotational errors – which are often unavoidable in precision motion installations. By enabling in-process compensation for these errors, the multi-DoF encoder system improves process capabilities.
The multi-DoF encoder approach streamlines system architectures while maintaining compatibility with a variety of serial interfaces and motion control platforms. It allows designers to tailor scale and read-head configurations to suit applications.
