Multi-axis servodrives tackle complex, dynamic motion tasks

Lenze has used the 2025 SPS show in Germany to preview a modular multi-axis servodrive that promises machine-builders a future-proof upgrade path for sophisticated motion controls. The i950 multi-drive has an built-in DC rail system, simplifying cabling and creating time and cost benefits. The drive is aimed at machine-builders faced with the challenge of implementing increasingly complex and dynamic motion tasks efficiently in a space-saving manner.
“With the i950 multi-drive, we are expanding our servo portfolio in an evolutionary way and setting a new standard for modular, powerful and future-proof servodrive solutions,” says Daniel Repp, a product manager in Lenze’s Motion Control business. “Our new product combines the strengths of the successful i750 and i950 devices and thus offers a very high power density, compact design and maximum flexibility – with significantly simplified installation and commissioning.”
With a 0.55–30kW power range and a high overload capacity, the compact multi-drive allows users to migrate from Lenze’s 9400 and i950 single-drive systems to advanced multi-axis architectures, while retaining the i950 single-drive modularity. Selectable fieldbus modules allow integration into control architectures from other manufacturers.
Built-in safety functions include Safety over EtherCat (FSoE), ProfiSafe and the Safety Validation Tool. The drive supports both synchronous and asynchronous motors, and can control linear and torque motors. High torque density and fast current control enable precise and dynamic motion control.
The multi-drive system is suitable for demanding motion tasks that require precise, dynamic and synchronised sequences. Typical applications include printing systems with multiple axes, automated packaging lines, precision cutting and forming machines, and storage and retrieval machines. The drive enables simple integration, reduces variant diversity and bearing complexity. Hybrid motor connectors using a One Cable Technology ensure fast installation with a low risk of errors.
“With the i950 multi-drive, we are shaping the future of motion control and consistently developing our servo portfolio further,” says Repp. “Our customers benefit from a powerful, flexible and easy-to-integrate solution that meets the increasing demands for efficiency, safety and connectivity.”
