AUTOMATION FOR MANUFACTURING

Integrated motors use IO-Link to simplify machines and deliver data

AMCI’s IO-Link motor line brings intelligence and connectivity closer to the application

The US automation and motion controls specialist Advanced Micro Controls (AMCI) has announced a family of integrated motors and controls that use IO-Link to bring communications and diagnostics to the point of motion. It says that by integrating drive functions with the motor and using IO-Link, the new family will simplify machine architectures, and give control systems greater access to device information.

Traditional motion architectures usually require separate motors, drives, feedback devices and extensive wiring. AMCI’s integrated approach combines key motion-control functions into a single device, reducing components and simplifying installation.

With IO-Link connections, says AMCI, a motor becomes more than an actuator. It becomes an intelligent device within the automation system, providing access to configuration, identification, diagnostics and operating data.

The IO-Link motor line supports industry’s move towards more connected, data-driven machines. AMCI says that the result is motion systems based on the principle: the smarter the motor, the simpler the machine can be.

IO-Link will allow manufacturers to connect field devices directly to a control architecture while maintaining access to device-level information.

  • For machine builders, this can simplify commissioning and provide greater visibility into equipment performance.
  • For maintenance teams, device diagnostics and identification can help reduce troubleshooting times.
  • For OEMs, the standardised connectivity can help create more consistent machine architectures across applications.

The new family includes Nema 17, 23 and 34 integrated motors, as well as DC and AC stepper drives and controllers, giving machine-builders the flexibility to choose the right technology for their application, while benefiting from simplified wiring, streamlined commissioning, built-in diagnostics and IO-Link connections.

Key benefits that AMCI is claiming for the new family include:

  • More streamlined machine designs
  • Standardised device communications
  • Reduced wiring and component counts
  • Simplified commissioning and configuration
  • Device identification and parameter management
  • Diagnostic information for faster troubleshooting
  • Easy device replacement with parameter restoration
  • Greater visibility into machine operation
  • A compact design for space-constrained applications

Other configurations and products will be added as AMCI expands its IO-Link platform.
