AUTOMATION FOR MANUFACTURING

Industrial PCs use CPUs designed to support AI applications

Emerson’s IPCs combine the latest industrial processors with optimised cooling

Emerson has announced a range of high-performance industrial personal computer (IPC) models for demanding applications, including AI (artificial intelligence), ML (machine learning) and advanced analytics. The PACSystems IPC 6010, 7010 and 8010 are Emerson’s first IPCs to use CPUs designed specifically to support AI-enabled capabilities such as predictive maintenance, process optimisation, quality inspection, decision support and supply chain management.

The industrial-rated 13th-generation Intel Core Processors have up to 64GB of soldered ECC memory that resists shock and vibration. Fan-less cooling allows extended operation at up to 70ºC, with thermal monitoring and optional fans available for high-temperature environments. Patented vibration and thermal technologies are claimed to boost reliability and extend operating lives.

SSD (solid-state drive) storage is available up to 4TB. There are multiple gigabit Ethernet interfaces and up to four PCIe slots. The IPCs can be tailored for vision systems, advanced analytics, data processing, historisation/visualisation, and other rigorous functions for process optimisation and operational insights.

Pre-installed, pre-licensed operating systems with edge and visualisation software simplify the deployment of common configurations, while also allowing users to customise their systems. OS options include Windows IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021, PACEdge, and Linux. Software options include PACEdge, Movicon Connext, and Movicon WebHMI. Alternatively, users can load their own OS or software. Built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) crypto-processors and Secure Boot software ensure that data and operations are kept secure.

“These innovative next-generation IPCs are a key part of the critical hardware backbone supporting Emerson’s Boundless Automation vision,” says Harish Shinde, vice-president and general manager for controls and software in Emerson’s discrete automation business. “PACSystems IPCs are an ideal platform for developers seeking to futureproof industrial systems and achieve continuous uptime, even in extreme environments as they create IoT, AI, and other advanced applications.”
